Opae Ula come from anchialine pools in Hawaiian lava rock and are unlike anything else in the hobby. They live in brackish water (a simple marine salt mix at around SG 1.010), need no filter or heater, only want feeding every week or two, and routinely live past ten years. A planted jar on a desk can house a colony for years. They move slowly and breed slowly, but a swarm of these little rubies drifting about is very hard to look away from. One thing to know: they cannot live with our freshwater shrimp and need their own brackish setup.
